HELP! My Car Won't Start!

Updated: Dec 6, 2021

You are about to get on with your day. You get into your car, step on the pedal and press the start button. However, you do not hear the familiar engine sound coming into action.

This experience might be familiar to most car owners and it just disrupts your plans for the day.

So, what do you do next? Do you immediately call for roadside assistance or a tow truck?

Below, we will elaborate on some symptoms and the possible causes of failures, so that you can decide on what to do next.

Is there a rapid clicking sound heard when starting the car?

More often than not, it is the good old battery that has gone flat if you hear this symptom. Instead of calling for roadside assistance, you should try to jump-start the car first.

It will be handy if you have a pair of jump-start cables in your car. You will just need to get help from a good Samaritan who can spare some of his or her time time so that you can connect the cables to their car battery to jump-start the car.

Important notes when jump-starting the car:

  • Ensure that the cars are not blocking the traffic and both car engines are off

  • Make sure that each end of the red cable is clipped on the positive terminals of both car batteries.

  • Then, clip one end of the black cable to the other car battery's negative terminal and ensure that the other end is being earthed, which means that it is clipped on another metal part of your car's engine bay (and not on your car battery's positive terminal! In fact, keep it far away from it)

  • Start the other car's engine first before starting yours

If your car is able to start, quickly drive to the nearest workshop or car battery shop to get the battery and charging system checked. You have saved time and money by not calling and waiting for roadside assistance to come.

If you do not have jump-start cables in your car, we can only ask....WHY?!

These are not expensive. Click here to get a pair of good but inexpensive jump-start cables.

However, what if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere or in a situation that you are unable to get someone to help? This is why we highly recommend that you invest in a portable jump-starter. It really comes in handy for this kind of situation and saves you precious time as you can jump start the car yourself.

Here are three reasonably priced recommendations that you should check out.

In case it is not because of a flat battery for your car not starting, these are other symptoms that you might encounter.

One loud click heard when starting the car

There is a high probability that your starter motor is faulty and it needs to be replaced. In this situation, we suggest that you immediately call for a tow truck.

Vehicle starts momentarily and immediately dies off

Please check that the car is not out of fuel. If it is, then you need to get someone to bring down a can of petrol or diesel to get it running again.

If the above is not the case and jump-starting doesn't work, then it is time to call the tow truck to bring your car to the nearest authorized workshop or your regular workshop. There might be issues with your car alternator, fuel system, electrical system or even your engine.

Just hope and pray it's nothing serious!

We certainly hope that this simple guide will help you to make a quick decision in a distressful situation and potentially save you time and money.
